Convicted rapist Thabo Bester and his girlfriend Dr Nandipha Magudumana have been brought back into the country.
A plane ferrying the duo landed at Lanseria Airport in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The fugitive couple were apprehended in Tanzania last week by Tanzanian authorities. And were handed over to the South African government.
They had been on the run since last year after Bester escaped from a prison in Bloemfontein. He was held there for rape and murder.
While at the maximum security prison, Bester successfully faked his own death to facilitate his escape.
It is alleged that Dr Magudumana facilitated Bester’s prison break by providing a body to be reported as his.
A fire was allegedly set on the cell Bester was said to be in and a burnt out body was later retrieved.
This has proved to have been a decoy to deceive the authorities into thinking that the burnt body was that of Bester.
However, an autopsy report revealed that the body found in the cell had already died long before the fire broke out.
And also the height of the body recorded during the autopsy was 25 cm shorter than Bester’s height.
The DNA of the body did not match with that of the woman who claims to be Thabo Bester’s mother.
The couple are currently held at Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.
